Especially as, in the case of Shoreditch’s cleverly-named The Green Vic, it’s a pub that’s doing a bit more then providing locals with alternative to going home with a bag of cans.
The Green Vic has set out to be the world’s most ethical pub. It uses sustainable produce wherever it can and it avoids sending anything to landfill by recycling and composting.
Owner Randy Rampersad says he wants to help pub-goers give to charity without having to change their daily routine.
Randy goes out of his way to offer jobs to homeless or disabled applicants, and the pub’s drinks menu benefits a diverse range of charities.
“I wanted to create a business that made the world a better place”
“Every single drink you buy goes towards a different charity,” Rampersad, 35, told Reuters. “The soap in the toilets, the toilet paper, the staff uniform, all of them help either the homeless or give money back to charity as well.”
The pub’s own Brewgooder craft lager, for example, is brewed by a non-profit brewer that donates everything it makes from the £4.90 price per pint to help clean water projects in Africa.
There are also regular events focusing on individual charities, many of which will devise a signature cocktail for its special Tuesday evening cocktail nights and of course you won’t be drinking them through a plastic straw – the pub offers actual dried-out wheat stems instead.
The pub is currently a pop-up – open for just three months – but Randy hopes to make it a longer-term operation.
He says: “I wanted to create a business that made the world a better place, where people can contribute to charity without changing their normal daily routine, has the capability to expand across the UK and combined my passion for partying so a social enterprise pub was the natural fit.
“One of the drinks brands I work with, ‘Toast Ale’ has a famous quote that sums up my vision perfectly; ‘if you want to change the world, you have to throw a better party than the ones destroying it’, that’s exactly what I am trying to do – make a difference and have fun at the same time.”
