It’s popularly believed that we swallow eight spiders a year while we’re asleep.
That’s improbable. But Jenna Evans swallowed something even more unlikely while she was in the Land of Nod.
Jenna, 29, had a dream that she was on a train trying to get away from gangsters who were trying to steal her engagement ring. So she popped the sparkler into her mouth for safe keeping. As you do.
It was only when she woke the next morning that she realised that she really had put the ring – with a good-sized square-cut diamond – into her mouth while she was half asleep.
She woke her fiancé Bob Howell and had some trouble convincing him too what she had done.
Once she had convinced him, and once they’d spent 90 minute laughing about it, Bob drove Jenna to A&E.
“I struggled to explain why I was there,” Jenna said,
“Because I was laughing and crying so hard.
“The doctor ordered an X-ray and seemed pretty shocked when she walked back in with a second doctor and showed me that sure enough, my ring was right there in my stomach!”
A gastroenterologist who was called in to consult thought it might be dangerous to “let nature take its course” and the doctors decided to take action.
Jenna, from California, says: “At this point, I could definitely feel it in my guts, it was starting to really hurt and make us nervous.
“They decided an upper endoscopy was just the thing and said ‘don’t worry its not big deal, but please sign this release form just in case you die’.”
Although she’s laughing about it now, Jenna says she was very upset and anxious about the procedure at the time.
But it all turned out well.
She said: “Everything went great, they found my ring just beyond my stomach in my intestines, retrieved it and gave it to Bobby, not me.”
Jenna was in quite a state from the anaesthetic, craving all the food that she had been told to avoid following the operation.
Fiancé Bobby tried to talk sense into her but they eventually compromised on a burger, cheese fries and a milkshake.
Worried that she wasn’t quite herself after being anaesthetised Bobby wouldn’t give Jenna her ring back until she’d had a good night’s sleep.
She added: “Bobby finally gave my ring back this morning.
“I promised not to swallow it again, we’re still getting married and all is right in the world.”
