Winter Olympics 2018: Elise Christie crashes out in semi-final of 1500m speed skating | Other | Sport

After a clear first set of laps at the Gangneung Ice Arena, Christie tangled with China’s Li Jinyu on the final turn.

The Edinburgh-born speed skater was unable to keep her balance as she entered the home straight.

And she slid into the barriers at high speed as Li’s body crashed through hers.

Christie’s skating suit appeared to have been cut open in the collision.

And she had to be stretchered off the ice after being unable to get to her feet herself.

“My heart goes out to this young lady,” he told BBC Sport. “She skated a fantastic race.

“It appeared as if Li may have cut her blade into Christie’s skating suit.

“This is an awful disaster. She is being taken off by a stretcher. Disaster.”
