Over the last century, scores of ships and aircraft have vanished in the infamous part of the Atlantic Ocean.
Everything from time warps to aliens have been blamed for the unusual rate of puzzling disasters.
Here JAMES MOORE reveals some fascinating facts about the freaky phenomenon and some potential explanations for the Triangle’s bizarre events…

Weird waters
THE Bermuda Triangle covers an area of half a million square miles in the North Atlantic Ocean between Miami in Florida, the island of Puerto Rico and Bermuda itself.
Tales of strange events date back to explorer Christopher Columbus who logged a “strange fire” crashing into the sea in 1492. It’s reckoned at least 75 planes and hundreds of ships have gone missing there with the loss of around 1,000 lives.
An average 20 yachts and four aircraft are lost annually. SHIP SHOCKER IN 1918 the USS Cyclops, a 500ft American Navy cargo ship, went missing with 309 crew.
No distress call was received, nor wreckage ever found. Two of its sister ships, Proteus and Nereus, were also lost in the North Atlantic during World War Two.
In October 2015 another 790ft cargo ship, El Faro, was lost, along with 33 crew, in the Triangle. Sudden 30-metre rogue waves found in what’s known as “hurricane alley” could be behind some of the maritime mishaps.
But geological effects making compasses behave erratically, deadly “invisible reefs” and even sea monsters are also blamed.

Fatal flights
ONE of most notorious incidents occurred in December 1945, when five US Navy bombers took off on a routine training mission, in good conditions, from a US air base.
Flight 19 disappeared over the Atlantic, while a rescue plane sent to find them also disappeared. A total of 27 lives were lost.
The aircraft could have simply got lost and run out of fuel.
However, no wreckage was located. Theories include the possibility of extreme thunderstorms producing violent “rain bombs” and alien abduction!

Ghost ships
SHIPS have been spotted floating above the sea in the Bermuda Triangle, but scientists think this may have been caused by a sort of optical illusion called Fata Morgana where rays of light are bent when they pass through air layers of different temperatures which are common in the region.
Lost underwater city
THE fabled lost city of Atlantis is believed to lie off the Bahamas, inside the Triangle, where strange rock formations have been found.
Some believe mystical crystals from the city transmit pulses of energy that can sink ships.
Time travel
IN 1970 pilot Bruce Gernon flew into a strange tunnel in a cloud on his way from the Bahamas to Florida.
Afterwards he found he had apparently jumped 28 minutes forward and 100 miles.
He believes an electronic fog distorted time.
