Amateur astronomer Steve Martin is convinced he has found proof of life on Mars after spending hours trawling through Nasa images.
But bizarrely he believed that the “extra-terrestrial” is in fact a Humboldt penguin sticking its head out from behind a rock.
The penguins are usually found in South America and breed off the coasts of Chile and Peru.
Steve told The Sun: “I’ve always thought there was life on Mars and now I think I might have proved it.
“I have spent hours looking at Nasa images but I never thought I would find a penguin.
“I don’t know how it got up there but I hope NASA carefully study the picture and can work out how and why.”
The news comes after a conspiracy theorist claimed to have discovered an alien base on Mars after looking through NASA photos.
The alleged alien hideout was captured by NASA’s 2001 Mars Odyssey Mission near Olympus Mons – the largest known volcano in the solar system.
“I’ve always thought there was life on Mars and now I think I might have proved it”
Two rocky structures are visible in the bottom right corner of the baffling photo, taken while NASA was monitoring volcanic run-offs.
UFO expert Scott C Waring shared the image on conspiracy blog UFO Sightings Daily.
He said: “The thing that really stands out is the square structure with a tunnel connecting to a pyramid area.
“What this tells me is that the aliens that created it did not just roam around the planet freely but instead used the tunnels to stay safe.
“This is just one of hundreds of buildings I have reported in NASA photos.
“Can you imagine how aliens must have interacted and influenced humanity’s history on Earth?
“Those creative geniuses that changed the world with their art, religion, math, science and technology were either influenced by aliens to do the work or were aliens themselves.”
