Tottenham stars felt that Mauricio Pochettino no longer had the same passion for the job and he therefore lost the support of the dressing room.

Pochettino was sacked on Tuesday night following a poor start to the campaign which has seen Spurs slump to 14th place in the Premier League table.

According to The Athletic, the last drop occurred when the Argentine lost the support of the dressing room as the players sensed that he did not have the same relish for the job as he did in previous seasons.

The team would also start to struggle with the former Southampton boss’ demanding coaching style as some stars have grown older and no longer have the same energy.

Pochettino would impose double training sessions with very little time off to recuperate and that started to take a toll for some.

An insider said: “The old effect of the double sessions had gone, and it was mentally important to regenerate.

“So the moment of the sacking is a bit surprising, but the fuel tank got empty much earlier.

“At a certain moment, it is just over.”

Pochettino was replaced by Jose Mourinho a few hours after Tottenham let the Argentine go.

Chairman Daniel Levy is confident Mourinho is the perfect replacement as he has enjoyed success with every team he has coached since 2002.

Levy added that the Special One would also create a positive environment in the dressing room.

The Tottenham chief said: “In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football.

“He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician.

“He has won honours at every club he has coached.

“We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”
