Steven Gerrard planning Rangers stay

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard insists he’s in it for the long haul at Ibrox after seeing the Gers throw away a great chance of scooping his first trophy in management.

Rangers lost 1-0 to arch-rivals Celtic in last weekend’s Scottish League Cup final Old Firm Derby at Hampden Park.

“I want to stay at Rangers and I am as hungry and determined to get the good days back here as I have ever been,” Gerrard said.

“I think we are going in the right direction, I believe in these players and the direction the club is going.”

Chelsea ready January transfer bid

Chelsea are prepared to spend big on Wilfried Zaha in January in order to beat Arsenal to the Crystal Palace winger.

Express Sport revealed earlier this week that Chelsea and Arsenal are expected to move for Zaha in the new year transfer window.

The Mirror report Chelsea chiefs are ready to allot plenty of funds to getting a deal done, with Frank Lampard keen to boost his attack.

Chelsea were looking unlikely to be able to make signings in January but the appeal against their transfer ban was successful.

Arsenal owners’ next manager decision

Arsenal’s owners the Kroenkes would rather their next manager have previously played for the club.

The Daily Mail report Stan and Josh Kroenke want a former Gunners stars in the dugout if possible.

That has come as a boost to Mikel Arteta and could explain why the Manchester City coach is top of Arsenal’s wanted list.

Patrick Vieira has likewise been identified by Arsenal as an option to replace Unai Emery, who left the Emirates at the end of last month.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Man Utd business

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is adamant top players want to go to Old Trafford – despite seeing Paulo Dybala and Jadon Sancho snub the Red Devils over the summer.

“Agents might not want to [go to United] but players will do,” Solskjaer said. “I don’t speak to too many agents.

“United are the biggest and best in the world and I’m sure there’s so many players in the world who want to be part of the rebuild. Our players and fans enjoy our football and opposition players will like to be part of it as well.”

United missed out on Dybala and Sancho as they tried to bolster their attack after the forwards opted to stay at Juventus and Borussia Dortmund respectively.

Arsenal hopes questioned

Arsenal will be fortunate to appoint Carlo Ancelotti given his record of managing clubs at the top of the game.

That is the verdict of Liverpool legend Graeme Souness, who raised doubts about the Gunners’ chances of landing the Italian while appearing as a pundit on Virgin Media.

“Would the big managers take Arsenal at the moment? I’m not so sure,” Souness said. “I don’t think the next man at Arsenal is going to be the one to turn the corner for them.

“I think there’s a lot of work to be done there, especially with those players. I think [Ancelotti] is a big manager and if you look at the jobs he’s had – Real Madrid, PSG, Chelsea – you know Arsenal are a fabulous club, but right now it’s a difficult job, whoever gets it.”

Unai Emery in Arsenal talks

Unai Emery is still negotiating his severance package with Arsenal almost two weeks on from leaving the Emirates.

The Gunners sacked the Spaniard at the end of November following a disappointing start to the season under his lead.

The Athletic report, though, that talks over how much Arsenal will have to pay him following that decision are still continuing.

Arsenal are now looking for a replacement, with Mikel Arteta understood to be their first choice but Carlo Ancelotti an option too.

Erling Braut Haaland transfer advice

Erling Braut Haaland should continue listening to his father Alf-Inge as he weighs up where his future lies when he leaves Red Bull Salzburg.

That’s according to Jan Aage Fjortoft, who told Goal: “His dad is proving to be a good adviser for him as he knows from his experience how the game works and understood that moving to Salzburg when he did and turning down an offer from Juventus was the best option for Erling’s development.

“Things might be different in the upcoming January transfer window and, if a club comes in with enormous amounts of money, they will have to let him go.

“From Salzburg’s point of view, this may be the perfect moment to sell him for the biggest price after he scored eight goals in the Champions League and then it will come down to making the right choice for Team Haaland.”

Man Utd eye Bruno Fernandes… again

Manchester United might be set for another transfer window of chasing Bruno Fernandes after fresh reports linked them with the midfielder.

Portuguese outlet O Jogo claim United want to add the Sporting Lisbon ace to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad next year.

However, United are not the only team interested in the highly-rated Portugal international, who plays alongside Cristiano Ronaldo for his country.

Atletico Madrid are also said to have Fernandes in their sights as they look to bolster Diego Simeone’s midfield.

Everton to open Carlo Ancelotti talks

Everton are planning to open talks with Carlo Ancelotti after the Italian was dispensed with by Aurelio De Laurentiis.

Napoli’s chairman decided to axe the former Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain gaffer after a rift opened up between the pair.

But he could soon be back in management, with Sky Sports reporting Everton are poised to begin negotiations with him.

Everton are on the lookout for a new manager after sacking former boss Marco Silva last week.

Frank Lampard backs Carlo Ancelotti

Frank Lampard believes his former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti is in line for a “top level” job when he returns to management.

After learning of Ancelotti’s departure from Napoli, Lampard said: “I have huge respect for him, I am very sorry for him. I know it was a tough job for him lately.

“I saw his interview before the game and I thought it was a very typically classy interview in what seemed a very tough time for him.

“He always handles himself brilliantly. I think he can work anywhere in the world at the top level, of course.”

Man Utd plot Saul Niguez deal

Manchester United are interested in striking a £126m deal to sign Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid according to reports in Spain.

The Red Devils are keen to bolster their midfield ranks having waved goodbye to both Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera this year.

AS claim they’re prepared to stump up Niguez’s release fee thanks to his impressive performances under Diego Simeone at Atletico.

Atletico might, though, try to keep Niguez even if United make a bid because they’d sooner offload former United target Thomas Lemar.

Arsenal deal blocked Chelsea exit

Chelsea were planning to loan Fikayo Tomori to Everton before David Luiz quit Stamford Bridge for Arsenal over the summer.

Tomori has gone from strength to strength under Frank Lampard this season having impressed under the Blues boss at Derby last term.

Things could have panned out differently for him, though, had Chelsea not been forced to offload Luiz back in August.

Goal report Tomori was all set to head to Everton on loan, only for Luiz’s departure to mean he had to stay at Chelsea.

Chelsea handed transfer boost

Chelsea target Nathan Ake could leave Bournemouth in January admits Cherries boss Eddie Howe as the Blues plot a deal to take the defender back to the south coast.

Are was on Chelsea’s books as a youngster and they can re-sign him for a knockdown £40m thanks to a clause in the agreement which took him to Bournemouth.

Howe said: “It would be obviously my wish to hold onto everybody but some of these things are out of our control. We will wait and see. I don’t want to give you evasive answers but I am in no control of that at the moment.

“A lot of things with transfers [from] trying to bring players in, trying to keep the squad we have is out of my hands. Obviously, we will be doing our best to be as strong as we can into the second half of the season.”

Man Utd hit with transfer warning

Manchester United must rely on one of Donny van de Beek’s more high-profile suitors dropping out of the race for him if they are to secure a deal.

That’s the verdict of ESPN pundit Alejandro Moreno, who says United are no longer on a par with the likes of Real Madrid.

“Once you start flirting with clubs like Real Madrid and the level of those clubs, Manchester United becomes a secondary target,” Moreno said. “If he goes there, it’s because one of the other deals didn’t work out.”

Van de Beek is one of Europe’s most highly-rated young midfielders but on Tuesday night was unable to help stop Ajax being eliminated from the Champions League.

Liverpool want Kylian Mbappe

Liverpool are interested in luring Kylian Mbappe to the Premier League if the Paris Saint-Germain forward quits Ligue 1.

French outlet Le Parisian claim the Reds have set their sights on the fleet-footed forward, who is among the world’s top players.

Mbappe has in the past admitted he will one day have to leave his homeland in order to realise his career ambitions.

And fans have previously speculated Liverpool could be a destination for him with his sponsors Nike set to make their kits from next season.

Chelsea talks over Willian

Chelsea have heard from Juventus over a potential January deal which would see Willian reunite with former boss Maurizio Sarri.

Express Sport understands the reigning Serie A champions are interested in signing up the Brazil international to bolster their frontline.

And they have contacted Stamford Bridge chiefs to see if there’s any chance they could get hold of him in the new year.

Chelsea, though, are reluctant to let go of Willian and he is understood to be eager to stay, rather than play under former Blues manager Sarri again.

Leicester’s James Maddison price tag

Manchester United face having to stump up at least £100m if they are to prise James Maddison away from Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester.

Maddison – a boyhood United fan – is on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s radar as the Red Devils boss seeks some creativity for his midfield.

The Athletic, though, report United face paying a club-record fee if they are to get the former Norwich playmaker on board.

Maddison is rated at more than £100m by Leicester, who last summer managed to extract a Premier League-record fee from United for Harry Maguire.

West Ham target fancies move

West Ham managerial target Eddie Howe is said to be ‘very keen’ on taking the reins at the London Stadium if Manuel Pellegrini is sacked.

Pellegrini moved closer to the exit door on Monday night after Arsenal fought back to beat the Hammers 3-1 on their own turf.

This weekend’s showdown with Southampton now appears to be a must-win game if the Chilean is to avoid being sacked by the West Ham board.

Football Insider claim Bournemouth manager Howe has been eyed to replace Pellegrini and he is said to fancy a move to east London.

Shanghai SIPG coach Pereira ruled himself out of the running for the Toffees job on Wednesday having been lined up by Farhad Moshiri.

The Telegraph are now reporting Everton chiefs have moved on quickly with Ancelotti at the top of their shortlist.

Ancelotti is available as a free agent having left Napoli on Tuesday despite guiding them into the last 16 of the Champions League.

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho plots reunion

Tottenham could soon welcome Marouane Fellaini back to the Premier League with Jose Mourinho keen on a reunion with the midfielder.

Fellaini became one of Mourinho’s go-to players during their shared stint at Manchester United and there was plenty of admiration shared between the duo.

Belgian outlet Les Sports claim Tottenham have now made Fellaini a priority target with the January transfer window on the horizon.

Fellaini also plied his trade in the UK with Everton, but has been playing in China with Shandong Luneng since last season’s winter window.

Chelsea transfer hint

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has suggested he will be in the market for a forward in January after the Blues’ transfer ban was chopped in half.

Speaking after Chelsea’s win over Lille on Tuesday night, the former midfielder admitted his side were missing the departed Eden Hazard.

“When you lose a player like Eden Hazard you lose a huge part of your goalscoring,” Lampard said. “We are just not at the moment converting enough chances.

“Big clubs go out and buy and we are a big club. I am calm about the window. But if business can be done then we will do it.”

Sadio Mane Liverpool exit

Liverpool star Sadio Mane might consider leaving Anfield if the Reds build on last season’s Champions League triumph by scooping more trophies.

That’s according to The Athletic’s Liverpool correspondent Simon Hughes, who said Mane might “think” about a switch amid speculation over his future.

Mane has previously been linked with Barcelona and Real Madrid having cemented his status as one of the Premier League’s top forwards.

The Senegal international has already bagged nine goals in 15 top-flight appearances this season, as well as providing four assists.

The Red Bull Salzburg hotshot has a lengthy list of admirers having enjoyed a stunning first half of the season in front of goal.

Bout was in attendance on Tuesday night as Salzburg played host to Liverpool in their final Champions League group game.

Haaland did not score against Liverpool but offered a threat with plenty of good movement and he went close with one second-half effort.
