Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho hints Harry Kane could miss Euro 2020 with injury | Football | Sport

Jose Mourinho has raised fears that Harry Kane could miss the Euros after claiming he might not be fit to play again until next season. The Tottenham and England talisman went under the knife at the weekend for an operation on his hamstring after he had initially be ruled out until late April.

At the weekend, he posted a picture of him recovering at home with his foot in heavy strapping with a positive message of support for Spurs in his absence.

However, in his press conference to preview Tottenham’s FA Cup third round replay against Middlesbrough at White Hart Lane tomorrow night, the Portuguese let slip that Kane could be sidelined for longer than previously thought.

“We try the best we can,” Mourinho said. “News on Harry we don’t have and if you ask me every time we come here the answer will be the same.

“We expect him to be out until mid-April, end of April, May, next season I don’t know.”

Kane had a similar club-and-country race for fitness at the end of last season, when his return for the Champions League final was not deemed to be evidence enough of match readiness for the Nations League semi-final against Holland.

Gareth Southgate could have a similar dilemma ahead of him this summer, with only two warm-up international friendlies scheduled beyond the end of the domestic league season on May 17.

It also increases pressure on Daniel Levy to splash out on a recognised striker this transfer window with Mourinho adamant that neither Lucas Moura or Heung-Min Son can play as a long-term no. 9.

The arrival of midfielder Gedson Fernandes has at least moved closer after the Benfica player was spotted at the Tottenham training ground.

However, Mourinho was refusing to be drawn until the final details are put together on an 18-month loan deal.

“I am waiting for news,” he said. “So I cannot answer because I don’t know if we are getting him. I don’t think the Benfica president and coach both my friends will be happy if I speak about one of their players.

“I’m more worried about Middlesbrough than the market. With the rules even if we get the player you cannot play him in a reply so in this moment I am not interested in Gedson or any other players who could come.”
