Federer and Wawrinka came through their respective third-round matches this evening to set up a mouth-watering last-eight tie.
However, Wawrinka has only won three of the pair’s 23 previous meetings and all of his past successes have come on clay.
The world No 151 is a huge underdog going into the showdown and Croft believes he is going to have to play at his very best to pull off an upset.
Wawrinka certainly has top performances in his locker, having won three Grand Slam titles in his career to date, but it will be extremely difficult against an in-form Federer.
“They have had some terrific match-ups,” Croft told Sky Sports.
“We all remember that one at the O2 which is one of the best match-ups I’ve seen between the two of them.
“This will be a real test of where Stan Wawrinka’s tennis is at.
“We know where Roger Federer’s tennis is at. He has had a fantastic year. He hasn’t played an awful lot of tennis but done a huge amount of winning.
“We know that Wawrinka’s level has come up quite significantly these last few weeks.
“My goodness, he is going to have to play at an extremely high level at a sustained period of time to really get into Roger Federer’s head.
“But with the firepower he possesses, he is a dangerous threat to anybody.”
Although she believes Wawrinka can be dangerous, Croft has predicted Federer to win the tie and book his place in the semi-finals.
“I am going to go with Federer on the evidence we have just seen,” Croft added.
“Even though I think Stan is moving way better than anybody anticipated.
“But this is going to be a real test against somebody of the class of Federer.”
