Day two review – O’Sullivan wins

Ronnie O’Sullivan overcame Ding Junhui 6-5 in a thrilling battle on Tuesday to reach the last eight of the Players Championship.

The six-time world champion slipped from 5-3 to 5-5 at the Marshall Arena but a 95 break was enough to win.

Barry Hawkins got the better of Zhou Yuelong in a thrilling 11-frame affair and managed a tournament-best break of 143 on his way to victory.

Elsewhere, Australian world No 3 Neil Robertson thrashed Lu Ning 6-1 and Jack Lisowski saw off Martin Gould 6-3.

Day one review – Trump out

Defending Players Championship champion Trump was dumped out in the opening round by Stuart Bingham, who clinched a 6-5 win in Milton Keynes.

The world No 1 came from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 but could not manage victory, Bingham taking the deciding frame 69-0.

Elsewhere, Kyren Wilson thrashed Ryan Day 6-1 to advance to the next round.

Tournament preview

Defending champion Judd Trump is looking to bounce back from a shock third-round defeat at the Welsh Open at this week’s Players Championship.

The world No 1 was beaten 4-2 by Hossein Vafaei at Celtic Manor in Newport to crash out early and complained afterwards about the venue and the table.

Trump beat Yan Bingtao 10-4 in the final of this event last year with O’Sullivan the victor in both of the previous years.

His younger rival Trump is seeking a third success at this tournament, which began in 2011 and is played between the top 16 players on a one-year ranking list.

The 11th ranking event of 2021, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Neil Robertson and Mark Selby are among those who will be looking to thwart Trump in pursuit of the £125,000 prize.

Six-time world champion O’Sullivan suffered defeat in the final of the Welsh Open to Jordan Brown, the world No 81.
