Lewis Hamilton: Mercedes chief makes strong suggestion ahead of British Grand Prix | F1 | Sport

That’s the assessment of Mercedes boss Toto Wolff… but he is happy with Hamilton’s competitive edge.

Hamilton has won three world titles during his time with Mercedes and is expected to announce a new three year contract extension worth around £130million at the German Grand Prix.

He has taken the sport by storm ever since making his debut in Formula One in 2007.

There have been some frustrations along the way and often come to blows with his team-mates.

Hamilton often came to blows with his childhood karting friend Nico Rosberg during their four years together at Mercedes.

Alongside Valtteri Bottas there have been no such heated debates, but Hamilton’s competitive nature still remains.

Last time out at the Austrian Grand Prix he vented his frustration at the team after after they blew their chances of victory.

However, Wolff accepts that having a determined winner such as Hamilton comes with certain drawbacks.

“Exceptional individuals, you just have to accept that they have opinions, strong opinions and views and strong drive,” he said.

“That determination to win and that ambition in a situation is not an easy character trait to deal with.

“But it is just what we want in the team. The super nice, polite guy is not what we want.

“We want the guys that score the goals and win the trophies, so I embrace high maintenance.”
