Messi has won six of the last 10 Pichichi trophies with Cristiano Ronaldo winning three and Luis Suarez won the other.

Benzema has already matched his 2018-19 goal tally whilst his highest ever LaLiga haul came in 2016, with 24 goals.

The forward’s six league goals in 10 consecutive wins have seen Los Blancos overhaul arch rivals Barcelona and secure their first league title since 2017.

Real Madrid’s president Florentino Perez called for Benzema to be given the Ballon d’Or after he scored his 20th and 21st goals of the season against Villarreal on Thursday to hand his team the title. 

Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has also asked Perez to give him a new contract.

‘Benzema should be the Balon d’Or,’ said Madrid’s president. ‘I have not seen any player have as good a year as him.’
