Daniil Medvedev can ‘take out’ Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer at Aus Open | Tennis | Sport

Todd Woodbridge believes Daniil Medvedev is the man that can send Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer packing at the Australian Open. Medvedev enjoyed the summer of his life as he reached six consecutive finals, including the US Open final. The Russian’s form did dip by the end of the season with early exits at the Paris Masters and the season-ending ATP Finals.

But doubles legend Woodbridge feels the 23-year-old has the ability to beat the ‘big three’ and claim a maiden Grand Slam title.

“I’m going with Medvedev,” Woodbridge said.

“That run he had through the US Open was just phenomenal. I think he believes, I reckon he thinks he can get into a final and take those guys out.

“He’s also the most dynamic of that group. He’s going to run all day long, he’s going to keep that ball going.”

Former Australian player Sam Groth backed Djokovic to win for a record-extending eighth time.

“It’s easy for me, defending champion Novak Djokovic,” Groth said.

“He’s having a huge off-season at the moment. We’ve seen footage of him all over social media and all the training he’s doing.

“He was so devastating in that final last year against Rafa and it’s hard to go past him again.”

One player who won’t be in Melbourne is Kei Nishikori, who is struggling with a right elbow injury.

He said: “I’m so disappointed to miss playing in Australia in January.

“The #AusOpen has always felt like my ‘home’ Grand Slam and I’ll miss my fans in Melbourne.

“I’m also sorry to miss going to Perth for the first time for the ATP Cup and wish Team Japan the very best.”
