Ronnie O’Sullivan is bidding to win a sixth world title at The Crucible this month but finds himself on the verge of going out in the second round.
At the interval of the evening session, the ‘Rocket’ found himself trailing 8-4 to Carter.
Carter, 38, has lost all four of their meetings at the Crucible, including the 2008 and 2012 finals.
Rapid breaks of 121 and 61 saw O’Sullivan move 2-1 ahead, but the world number 15 made it 2-2 and a stylish 115 clearance put him 3-2 up earlier in the day.
But O’Sullivan can’t seem to catch a break at the moment and fans online believe his attitude is anything but that of a five-time world champion.
“Ronnie O’Sullivan not interested tonight – looks like he’s decided he’s going home #WorldSnookerChampionship”, one fan said.
“Right now we’re watching the flawed genius that is Ronnie O’Sullivan. Not in a good place #bbcsnooker”, another added.
A third quipped: “#bbcsnooker Can someone please ask the real Ronnie O’Sullivan to come and play?”
While another irate snooker fan tweeted: “Ronnie O’Sullivan really doesn’t look like he’s bothered here.”
One angry punter added: “See you later Ronnie O’Sullivan cheers for sinking everybet”.
O’Sullivan had been tipped as one of the favourites prior to the tournament kicking off.
And his odds were shortened even more to lift the trophy when defending champions Mark Selby was knocked out in the first round.
