That’s the view of Miami Open tournament director, and former player, James Blake.

Roger Federer is 37, with many wondering when the Swiss star will call it a day.


Federer takes on Daniil Medvedev tonight in the last-16 of the Miami Open, having reached the final at Indian Wells just over a week ago.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner is still regularly impressing, though hasn’t won a major since the Australian Open last January.

Blake became tournament director at the Miami Open when he retired, while many stars turn their hand to punditry.

And though American Blake knows a perfect opportunity could await Federer, he acknowledges that the Swiss ace has already done plenty for the sport.

“Roger, with what he has done on the tennis court, doesn’t need to give anything back to tennis for all he has done for the sport,” Blake told Express Sport.

“He clearly financially doesn’t ever need a job.

“But you can sense by the fact he is playing this long that he does love the sport. That’s pretty clear.

“So if he wants to, he grew up in Basel, it’s right there and that would be a pretty natural fit.

“But he may just want to take a rest.

“He’s been the face, the headliner for so many years.

“He’s had a target on his back by every player for 15 years now so if he wants to take a break, I don’t think anyone in the world would blame him.”

One former player who became a pundit is Greg Rusedski. And he believes Federer wants to win Olympic gold before he retires.

“I feel terrible for Roger, I really do,” Rusedski joked.

“He’s only got a silver medal in the singles. Twenty Grand Slams, 100 titles. I mean, poor guy!

“But you think about it – it is interesting. He signed a 10-year deal with this clothing manufacturer and this company is out of Japan.

“So boy would they love to have have Roger Federer in Japan holding that Olympic gold medal.

“It’s quite an interesting brand because the fact that it has casual clothes as well. So they want the logo everywhere.”
