It is claimed that US Navy airmen William Todd flew over a structure which he believed was the legendary boat from the Bible.
He is even quoted as giving an interview about finding what he believed was Noah’s Ark by the team who run the ARK InSight campaign.
Gerrit Aalten, a Bible scholar from the group, told Daily Star Online his account is one of the most compelling as to the whereabouts of Noah’s Ark.
ARK InSight believe that the giant boat which helped carry the Biblical figure of Noah and the world’s animals to safety during a global flood came to rest on Mount Ararat, in Turkey.
Mount Ararat has been subject to much speculation, however mainstream scientists do not accept the claims about the Ark.
Established experts also argue there no historical evidence that the events ever happened as described in the Bible.
“It is big, bigger than we thought it would be”
Todd is quoted as claiming he flew over the site in a AJ Savage plane while serving with the US Navy in Turkey.
He was on a survey mission during the summer of 1952 as the US helped the Turkish Air Force produce the first accurate aerial map of Turkey.
The US Navy photographer claims he spotted a structure he believes to be the ark atop Mount Ararat.
He claims the object was huge and frozen beneath the idea and snow atop the mountain, sitting at an altitude of around 16,000ft.
Todd claims he took photographs of the object from his plan, but none of this photographs are now available.
In an interview cited by ARK InSight, he said: “It was a rectangular, slate-colored boat. Everyone stated it was Noah’s ark.
“About 10 meters of the structure was protruding from the ice.We gave four or five copies of the pictures to all of our crew.
“The whole squadron of six mapping planes was abuzz about Noah’s Ark and everyday some plane ‘accidentally’ went by Ararat to see it.”
He added: “You practically needed a control tower around Ararat that summer.
“After seeing the photos, we were convinced that the structure was Noah’s Ark.”
Todd claimed he gave his copy of the photos to his baptist minister and then never got them back.
He also alleges the Naval Photographic Science Center Archives in Washington DC claims they “couldn’t find” the original negatives.
Mount Ararat is a volcanic mountain some 16,854ft high in Turkey and has been long considered the possible location of Noah’s Ark by some Christians.
Noah’s Ark appears in the Biblical book of Genesis and sails on the seas of a world-covering flood for 40 days before coming to rest on the “mountains of Ararat”.
The waters subside and God pledges to never again destroy the world with a flood after a sacrifice by Noah.
Geologists and historians found the flood myth irreconcilable with the modern understanding of the age of the world, the fossil record and world history.
ARK InSight scholar Aalten claims categorically that the so-called Ararat anomaly is the fabled Noah’s Ark.
“The Ark speaks to the imagination of all sorts of people, which makes it such an interesting subject.
“And soon there will be too much info to share with the public, because what has been discovered is really astonishing.
“One thing is sure about the ark in just one sentence; Noah’s ark is a masterpiece. And it is big, bigger than we thought it would be.”
Aalten claims that the Ark is hidden atop Mount Ararat broken into three pieces and hidden beneath rock and ice in a canyon.
He said: “Every now and then during hot summer months a little piece of one of these sections becomes visible because of the working of the glacier.
“We know from eyewitness accounts that the ark has moved about 50 meters lower in the glacier over the last 100 years.”
He added: “This moment in time ark-news pops up in the category ‘weird news’, but sooner or later this will become ‘world news’.”
Christian scholars continue to hunt for evidence of the Ark around the world, which was said to be a wooden ship 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 35 feet high.
Should the Ark ever be found, it would turn the common understanding of human history on its head as it would offer stunning proof of the timeline laid out in the Bible.
Daily Star Online previously revealed the CIA actually were involved in a search of the Ark on Mount Ararat.
Declassified documents revealed the spy agency was “consistently” urged to release imagery of the mountain, but also that the have “never been able to conclusively identify Noah’s Ark”.
