That is what NBA expert Leigh Ellis believes.
The Mavericks are reportedly listening to trade offers for the 21-year-old.
Having been the ninth overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft, Smith Jr. had a stand-out rookie year, in which he started 69 games.
But now, his time with the franchise appears to be over, and the Phoenix Suns are reportedly interested.
And Ellis explained that he believes the success of Doncic this season has led to Smith’s demise.
Doncic has shone in his rookie season, and has scored an average of 20.2 points per game. (PPG doesn’t need hyphenating)
“Clearly Luka Doncic is the future,” Ellis explained.
“And they obviously feel that Luka and Dennis Smith can’t work together.
“They’ve only had a small amount of time.
“But sometimes you can tell that yes, this isn’t going to work out long-term.
“So they’ve decided to cash in on him now.
“Because he is very young and his contract is virtually nothing.”
Ellis then went on to say that despite Smith being young and a promising talent, the Mavericks will not be able to recoup that much in a trade.
“Maybe you can get a few picks for him, the Mavericks already gave up their first round pick in this draft to the Hawks last year,” Ellis continued.
“So maybe that’s what they’re thinking that this guy isn’t where we want to go in the future, so let’s cash in on him now.
“But until you see that, it’s always a little bit unknown.
“It certainly feels like Dennis Smith was the man last year, but Luka has come along and made him redundant in some regard.”
