Max Verstappen gives brutal response to Red Bull axing Pierre Gasly for Alex Albon | F1 | Sport

Red Bull announced yesterday that Pierre Gasly has been relegated back to Toro Rosso in a swap which sees Alex Albon trusted with a senior seat.

Gasly has struggled with the pressure of performing for a leading F1 team this year.

Verstappen is third in the Drivers’ Championship with 181 points but his former team-mate only had 63 points, despite having the same car.

“Of course it is a pity for Pierre, but personally I don’t care who my team-mate is,” Verstappen told Dutch publication Telegraaf.

“The point is that we perform better with the other car and thereby gain more points for the team.”

Team principal Christian Horner’s decision to drop Gasly during the summer break did not come as a huge surprise.

But the promotion of Albon instead of fellow Toro Rosso star Daniil Kvyat did.

Kvyat is ninth in the standings – 11 points and seven places above Thai-Brit Albon.

But it is the 23-year-old who will attempt to keep tabs on Verstappen for the remainder of the year.

“Surreal to have been given this massive opportunity!” Albon wrote on Instagram.

“Can’t thank you enough for believing in me and making this possible.

“It’s a big jump into the deep end, but I’ve got my swimming shorts on!

“ Thanks to all the guys at Toro Rosso, especially [Toro Rosso Team Principal] Franz Tost for the massive opportunity in F1 and never-ending support throughout my first year!

“Now to focus for my first race with the team in Spa.”

The F1 season resumes at the Belgian Grand Prix on September 1.
