Man Utd news live updates: all the latest from Old Trafford

Thursday February 1

Varane promise

08:00: Real Madrid president Florentino Perez will reportedly allow Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho to sign Raphael Varane if he coughs up €60m (£53m).

Perez and Mourinho share a close relationship from their time together at the Bernabeu and the former has told the Portuguese he’ll sell Varane if he pays big.

The former Chelsea boss is willing to break the bank for Varane’s arrival but will first need to convince the board of his plans.

Diario Gol say Perez has ideas of his own to replace Varane with Inter Milan defender Leonardo Bonucci and Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax in his sights.

Mourinho given Neymar backing

07.15: Man Utd have a strong chance of landing Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar in the summer, according to reports.

According to Spanish outlet Don Balon, one major party is pushing for Neymar to make the switch to Old Trafford.

And that is iconic sponsors Chevrolet who feel the current United crop of players are not having the necessary impact.

The car company feel that Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Sanchez and not the poster boys which will strengthen their brand in Europe and Asia, say Don Balon.

Instead they will help to table a deal for Neymar to move from the French capital.

Lukaku slammed

06.45: Romelu Lukaku’s performance for Manchester United during their 2-0 defeat against Tottenham has been blasted by Harry Redknapp.

The BT Sport pundit compared his display to Harry Kane’s, who shone as Spurs ran out comfortable winners.

“There is no comparison between the two, he [Kane] is on a different level to Lukaku,” Redknapp told BT Sport.

“Kane is probably the best striker in Europe at the moment – he is a fantastic player.”

Sanchez fault

06.15: Jose Mourinho has conceded Alexis Sanchez’s only fault against Tottenham was that he tried to drop too deep at times.

The Chilean was unable to prevent United from losing 2-0 to Tottenham last night.

And after the match Mourinho said: “He worked hard, but again the transformation the game had, the game was not for him.

“In the second half, I tried to give him a position where he could be closer to [Romelu] Lukaku but then he felt the need to drop too much to organise.

“But he gave everything, good effort and this is a good feeling for me to know that the player is available with that spirit.”
