The two-time NBA Finals MVP is under contract until the summer of 2020 at the Warriors.

However, he has a player option for next year, which would see him earn a guaranteed £29million.

If he opts out, Durant will be able to secure a better deal going forward, be it at the Warriors or elsewhere.

Some have linked him with a potential move to the Los Angeles Lakers to team up with LeBron James.

Others suggest that he will want to go to a team with more of a challenge.

One of the biggest criticisms of Durant is that he joined a team that was already winning, rather than leading a team on his own. This is because the Warriors had won the NBA title the year before he joined and were fresh off a defeat in the NBA Finals.

NBA Hall of Famer Kevin McHale insisted that Durant will leave in the summer, and suggested that he will join a franchise like the New York Knicks with a fellow free agent.

This summer, Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, Klay Thompson and Kemba Walker will all have the opportunity to become free agents.

And McHale hinted that one of those stars could team up with Durant.

“Anywhere but Golden State,” he said when asked where Durant will be next year. “Honestly I don’t think he’s going to go back there.

“I watch him and there’s something dysfunctional with that team right now.

“So I would be shocked if he goes back there.

“I don’t think he’s going to stay in Golden State.

“I could see him hooking up with another free agent and saying, ‘Lets go here and win a championship together.’

“I’m not sure what city it is going to be in, I don’t think it matters anymore.

“But I think he’s going to leave Golden State.”
