The 11th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicks off on Saturday with two reinstated teams and a new broadcaster in a fresh testament to its undiminished appeal to India’s incurably cricket-obsessed masses.

Few expected the Twenty20 tournament to climb out of the morass of spot-fixing and illegal betting it descended into five years ago, which eventually led to bans on its Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals franchises.

But now they are back. And it’s Chennai Super Kings v Mumbai Indians…. LIVE!

MI 62-2 off 9 overs

16:12: Harbhajan went for four off his first but Yadav has opened up a little bit now. Two twos and a beautifully-cover driven for four and it’s 10 off the over.

And that’s the timeout.

MI 52-2 off 8 overs

16:10: Spin into the attack and it’s the 56-year-old – correction, 37-year-old – Harbhajan Singh who is as tight as ever.

The left-arm darts of Jadeja at the other end who is greeted with a text-book cover drive four from Kishan. He then follows it by opening the face and dabbing one wide of short third man for four.

“Smart batting,” says MIchael Clarke on comms. Mumbai regrouping here and the fifty is up.

MI 33-2 off 6 overs

16:00: You don’t see this very often… the two opening bowlers getting through three overs each on the spin.

But both Chahar and Watson are both getting good movement, attacking the stumps and extracting a little bit off this pitch that does have a greenish tinge to it.

Yadav and Kishan have a consolidation job on their hands here but they aren’t going into their shells – a four and a six off the sixth over from Yadav.

Still, just three fours and two maximums off the opening six overs and that’s the powerplay done. Advantage CSK.

WICKET – MI 22-2 off 4 overs

15:50: Rohit Sharma has just clobbered an almight six – but it’s six and out!

He dispatches Shane Watson but the Aussie has the last laugh as Rohit aims legside but gets a leading edge and Rayudu – JUSTS – catches a steepler.

He’s gone for 15 off 18 balls. Perfect start for CSK.

Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan at the crease.

WICKET – MI 7-1 off 2.1 overs

15:40: IPL history has been made… the first DRS review!

Chahar gets one to swing back at Evin Lewis and it raps him on the pads and the umpire has given it.

Lewis reviews. Has it pitched outside the line? Is there bat on it? Is it swinging down leg?

No, no and no. He’s gone and CSK have the breakthrough.

We’re off!

15:30: The IPL 2018 is underway! Deepak Chahar is steaming into bowl and Rohit Sharma and Evin Lewis are at the crease.

Chahar gets some early movement and Rohit plays and misses, and lets out a big ‘aaaah’ as the ball passes the bat.

Then he’s up the wicket with a huge swipe but he plays and misses. Then anothe play and miss… all going on already!

IPL start is minutes away!

15:25: If you want to watch the match, details are above. You’ll have the honour of the honour of listening to Mark Butcher and Tymal Mills in the Sky Sports studio.

The ground is starting to fill up and the crowd are going bonkers.

Forget El Clasico, the IPL is lightyears bigger in India.

‘It’s like El Clasico!’

14:55: Nothing like trying to hype the match up, eh?

As if the return of the IPL, and CSK, wasn’t enough, the Super Kings have likened the match to El Clasico!

Expecting to see Lionel Messi bowling off-spin and Cristiano Ronaldo opening up. Luis Suarez can carry the sandpaper…

Toss in 15 minutes

14:45: The players are out warming up and the toss is 15 minutes away.

We’ve just had the spectacular opening ceremony where Rohit Sharma made a vow to the Wankhede fans.

Damn right it will be. We’ll bring you team news when we get it.
