Fast and Furious is the latest movie franchise to enter into spin-off territory.
Joining the likes of Star Wars, the eight-movie large car heist franchise is getting a spin-off starring Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Jason Statham.
The spin-off is titled Hobs and Shaw.
Is Idris Elba joining Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in a spinoff?
The Luther star is in final negotiations to join Hobbs and Shaw as the main villain of the movie.
David Leitch, director of the blockbuster Deadpool 2, is on board to direct Hobbs and Shaw.
Both Johnson and Statham featured in the previous Fast and Furious film as special agent Luke Hobbs and criminal mastermind Deckard Shaw respectively.
Chris Morgan, the architect behind the Fast and Furious franchise has written the Hobbs and Shaw script.
The spin-off will have the often-at-odds pair teaming up with Elba as the main antagonist the duo will face.
Dwayne Johnson joined the franchise in 2015 with the fifth movie in the series.
Ever since Johnson’s arrival in the franchise Universal has tried in vain to create a spin-off for Luke Hobbs.
Jason Statham joined the series in the most recent movie, released in 2017.
Many cite the chemistry between Statham and Johnson as the catalyst behind the spin-off.
Though most know Elba for his role as Luther, he is no stranger to playing the baddie.
He appeared as the antagonist in “Star Trek Beyond” and voiced the baddest-baddie of them all – the famous Shere Khan in Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book.
2017 has been busy for Elba, as he reprised his role as Heimdall in “Thor: Ragnarok.”
He also starred in The Dark Tower, Molly’s Game, and The Mountain Between Us.
Elba took to directing with his recent Sundance film Yardie and is currently in production Turn Up Charlie, a comedy series he created, and will topline and executive produce for Netflix.
Hobbs and Shaw will be released in 2019.
