Esteban Ocon has revealed negotiations are on regarding a potential move to Williams once his time at Force India ends.
Esteban Ocon is widely regarded as one of the most promising prospects in F1 and currently sits 11th in the drivers’ standings.
But he his facing being without a seat next year with Lance Stroll set to replace him at Force India following the Canadian’s father’s takeover.
Ocon has now revealed joining Williams could be an option though, with the Grove-based team looking to replace Stroll.
“We are negotiating and we hope that everything will work out.
“Not having a contract for next season is not a catastrophe but you never know how things will develop in Formula 1.
“What I can promise is that next year I will do my best to be back in the championship in 2020.”
Ocon was linked with a move to Renault, as well as McLaren, prior to the French manufacturers capture of Daniel Ricciardo from Red Bull.
And the 22-year-old has now hit out at Cyril Abiteboul’s explanation that the snub came due to his ties to Mercedes.
“It’s a bit strange how it turned out, because I had options with two big teams and most drivers can only dream of that,” Ocon said. “But we will find a solution.
“Even if I have to miss next season, I am sure that I will return to Formula 1 in 2020.
“I was surprised when Renault signed a contract with Daniel Ricciardo.
“Renault has explained that it was because I was in the Mercedes programme, but I do not agree with Cyril Abiteboul.
“Yes I’m a Mercedes driver, but if I was in a Renault that wouldn’t matter.
“I’m a little upset that as a sportsman, it’s not only your sporting achievements that matter.”
Robert Kubica is among the other candidates to replace Stroll having test driven for Williams.
But the Pole has hinted he could leave them if another offer to return to the F1 grid comes along.
“I do not know why people only associate me with this team,” Kubica said.
“Today I am still bound by the deal with Williams, but we will see what happens.”
