Liverpool have been linked with Sweden and RB Leipzig star Forsberg in the past, with the player heavily tipped to sign in 2016.
On that occasion, however, Jurgen Klopp chose to focus his efforts elsewhere, landing Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle instead.
Forsberg does, however, remain in-demand. Today, he will lead Sweden’s efforts to overcome South Korea in their World Cup showdown, with Liverpool lingering in the background.
These are testing times for Janne Andersson’s side. Preparations for today’s match have not been smooth.
Andersson has made the bold call of choosing not to call upon Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Ibrahimovic rules the roost in Scandinavia. For well over a decade, he has led from the front. Omitting him was risky and took genuine guts.
Then Sweden have also had to apologise for spying on South Korean training. Again, hardly ideal.
In Forsberg, however, they have a genuine superstar. And one Liverpool may yet pounce to sign.
The Liverpool Echo have named him on the list of players the Reds will be watching at this year’s World Cup.
And they say that Klopp may pursue the Leipzig star if he blossoms in Russia.
If there’s any doubt as to Forsberg’s ability, just look to his manager.
Because, speaking before today’s match, Andersson heaped praise on his star performer.
“Emil Forsberg is our No1 player,” Andersson said.
“He’s fantastic to watch and he’s going to be a very important player for us.
“But I also think that Marcus Berg is going to be important too. I think he is going to score one or two times in Russia.”
