Bournemouth vs Manchester United: Latest Premier League score from the Vitality Stadium

Manchester United and Bournemouth go head-to-head at the Vitality Stadium.

Jose Mourinho will want a reaction from his side, who suffered an embarrassing defeat to rock-bottom West Brom at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Portuguese tactician vowed to drop established players for the FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham.

United can use their game in hand to stretch their lead over third-place Liverpool to four points and all but seal Champions League qualification.

Bournemouth are still in contention for a top-10 finish with six teams and 10 points separating them from the bottom three.

BOURNEMOUTH 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED

57: United are still looking the more threatening but that final ball keeps alluding them. Bournemouth, the kings of the comeback, haven’t shown too many signs of a revival.

54: Lewis Cook is shown the game’s first yellow card after a foul on Jesse Lingard. I know a few fantasy football managers who will be disappointed with that. -1

51: Oh Paul! Lingard and Herrera exchanges a few passes before laying it off to Pogba, who scuffs a needless backheel to a Bournemouth player.

48: Manchester United can wrap up a minimum fourth-place finish if they beat Bournemouth and Chelsea then drop points at Burnley tomorrow.

45: And we’re back underway folks. I can confirm that it’s no longer balmy on the south coast. Still pleasant enough. No changes for either side.

J-LINGZ…

HT: I know, 20 lashes for using the term ‘J-Lingz,’ in a public forum.

Jesse Lingard has been directly involved in 19 goals in all competitions this season (13 goals, 6 assists), one more than he managed in his previous three campaigns for Man Utd combined (18).

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Kyle: Manchester United looking a lot more fluid going forward in the latter stages. Rashford and Herrera improving their chances of starting in the semi-final. Decent half.

Debbie: Chris Smalling for England! A lion at the back and now a predator up front!

Martin: Why did Manchester United spend (waste) all that money on Alexis Sanchez? Just put Chris Smalling up front!

BOURNEMOUTH 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED

HT: United survive a late Bournemouth corner to take a one-nil lead in with them at the break. Just about deserved thanks to that Chris Smalling opener. It’s by no means a classic, but Jose Mourinho’s side have responded to Sunday’s defeat.

45: Save! Josh King bullies his way through the United defence before firing straight at De Gea, who parries it away. Would have to be something special to beat the Spaniard from that distance.

43: Eddie Howe is deep in discussion with his assistant. There’s plenty of pointing but not a great deal of action.

Paul Pogba wins the ball back in Bournemouth territory before teeing up Jesse Lingard, who fails to find the overlapping Marcus Rashford. Nice to see Pogba keeping it simple tonight.

40: Bit disappointed with Bournemouth. They were horribly flat against Liverpool over the weekend and they haven’t improved one jot. Flips flops on…

38: I’d love someone to talk about me the way Owen Hargreaves talks about Paul Pogba. Anthony Martial gets in behind and is played through by his compatriot, but the flag goes up.

35: Chris Smalling has scored in three consecutive Premier League away appearances, after scoring just once in his previous 101 away games.

33: Nathan Ake goes for the spectacular, but gets it spectacularly wrong as he swipes at fresh air. That will never not be funny.

30: Great response from the Cherries, who have two efforts in two minutes. The first came from Wilson, and the second from Fraser. De Gea gathered them both.

BOURNEMOUTH 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED – SMALLING

28: And there’s the breakthrough!

Chris Smalling, who’s turned into Lionel Messi in recent weeks, arrives in the box to tap home Jesse Lingard’s cutback from the byline.

I know someone who’s starting against Tottenham…

27: Rashford with a rocket! The striker drives into the area before stinging Begovic’s palms with an angled effort. That’s United’s first shot on target.

26: Ander Herrera is having a good game. The Spaniard is one of a few who always wants the ball. He’s pressing high and anticipating well. I’d say worthy of a semi-final starting role…

24: Bournemouth just starting to up the ante now. Fraser drives into the United box after some good play from Lewis Cook, but the deflected shot goes into the side netting.

21: Good play on the right between Wilson and Francis, but the defender is narrowly ruled offside.

18: Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw look a bit tentative going forward. They look desperate to avoid getting caught cold by the pace of Ibe & Wilson.

15: United just taking the tempo down a bit with some passing around the back. The plan appears to be sending hopeful balls forward to utilise Rashford’s pace. Not worked just yet.

12: United fans aren’t half making some noise in the away stand. Haven’t stopped singing since about 6.40pm…

Wilson plays a lovely one-two with Ibe and it’s a straight race with Jones, but he does enough to leave it go for the goal kick.

9: Ibe has an effort on goal from just outside the box, but drags it wide. Not much fluency from either side, but I suppose that was to be expected with so many changes.

6: Herrera concedes a free-kick within shooting range. Daniels looks like he’s going to ping one but he’s laid it off to Francis, who blasts it against the wall.

Martial marauds down the other end of the field and wins a corner. Didn’t see a run like during the whole 90 minutes at Old Trafford on Sunday.

3: I missed that. During his pre-match interview Jose Mourinho said: “In the last match, the only attacking player that I didn’t play was Dwight Yorke!” Options were explored…

Anyway, the hosts have started brighter with a high press causing United one or two problems. King look particularly lively.

1: And we’re underway on a balmy night in Bournemouth. I’d not used the word “balmy” before today, and I fully intend to over-use it in the next week.

Paul: Jose Mourinho is doing fine and intends to be with us for a long time! Some Manchester United fans are impatient for more Fergie-like success. Give him time!

Keith: Strange how Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino win nothing but are praised by fans.

She: This is a suicidal lineup from Jose. Darmian at right back, Jones and Smalling together, Fellaini…

BOURNEMOUTH vs MANCHESTER UNITED

19:40: Quick reminder of those line-ups. And yes, that really is Daley Blind making an appearance.

Bournemouth XI: Begovic, Francis, S Cook, Ake, Daniels, Fraser, Surman, L Cook, King, Ibe, Wilson.

Subs: Boruc, Gosling, Pugh, Arter, Defoe, Mousset, Simpson.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Jones, Smalling, Shaw, Darmian, Pogba, Herrera, Fellaini, Martial, Lingard, Rashford.

Subs: Pereira, Bailly, Sanchez, Lukaku, Blind, Young, Matic.

ZLATAN GOES TO HOLLYWOOD

19:35: It was always on the cards…

Zlatan Ibrahimovic appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and made a string of typically confident claims during the interview.

Ibrahimovic was greeted by rapturous applause before being interviewed by Kimmel, while many of his bold responses drew in plenty of excitement from the audience.

The Swedish star claims he will be going to the World Cup among other things, though did not specify whether that would be in a playing role.

He also said: “I’m not the typical Swedish guy, but I put Sweden on the map.”

Who else but Quagm… Zlatan!

JOSE SPEAKS…

19:30: Jose Mourinho has left his side with no excuses.

He’s just spoken to BT Sports, and said that his team are fresh and should have no problems showing high levels for 90 minutes.

Full quotes on the way.

‘IT DOESN’T MATTER’

19:25: Note to self, never make the assumption that Bournemouth are safe from relegation. Eddie Howe does not take too kindly to it.

“Everyone in the media had us down as safe after we had beaten West Brom. No matter how much I bang on to the players about certain things, I think that will seep into the subconscious,” he said this week.

“We had it in our first two seasons in this league where people hit a level and thought ‘well, that’s you done’ and then you just lose an edge to your performance.

“It is one of the most frustrating things I have had to deal with in the Premier League because it doesn’t matter to me whether we are safe or not, the principle is that you give your best in every game, you try to win every game and maximise every opportunity in front of you.

“You can’t take your foot off the pedal for a second in this league because you will get punished. A lot of outside noise will get through to the players and I understand that. But we have to have a better mentality to make sure it doesn’t affect us.”

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Jonny: That Manchester United defence is a real mish-mash of players who don’t really play together very often. Matteo Darmian is the weakest link & no doubt Jordan Ibe will look to take advantage. And if Fraser can have a good go at Shaw, it could be a very long evening for United.

Michael: Good to see Lukaku and Sanchez left out. But a start for Fellaini? Jose sees something in the big Belgian that no one else sees.

Lewis: I reckon that front three of Martial, Lingard and Rashford will run riot today. Plenty of speed and ambition.

RELEGATED…

19:15: I’m sure you’ve all heard the news that Manchester United have been relegated.

OK, I’ve been misleading.

It’s actually Manchester United’s Under-23s who’ve been relegated from Division One of Premier League 2.

Ricky Sbragia’s side saw their fate sealed by Derby’s 1-0 victory over West Ham on Monday, a result which leaves United five points adrift of safety with just one game to go.

PEAKED…

19:10: After winning their first Premier League meeting against Manchester United (2-1 in December 2015), Bournemouth have lost three and drawn one of the subsequent four.

IT’S COMING…

19:05: Transfer season is almost upon us folks.

And Manchester United have already been linked with a thousand incomings, but they’ve also been linked with a ton of departures.

Anthony Martial, Paul Pogba, Matteo Darmian, Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw have all made the headlines in recent weeks.

Tonight I’ll be asking who YOU would be happy to see leave in the summer.

TOP-FOUR FINISH…

19:00: I’ve tried guys, I’ve really tried. I’ve tried getting into Jose Mourinho’s head to understand his thought process, but I’ve failed.

Ahead of tonight’s clash, the Portuguese tactician said he thinks Manchester United still face a fight to secure a top-four finish, never mind sealing second spot.

But now he’s named his second-string for a tricky clash on the south coast.

He also said he would be dropping established players for the FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham.

He’s done that, but added that it’s nothing to do with rotation and also claimed it’s an “opportunity for people,” to make his starting XI for Saturday.

I’m lost.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Anthony: Jose Mourinho and his coaching entourage need to leave, wouldn’t shed a tear to see Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez go either. Much better side without all of them.

Aidan: Matteo Darmian’s last game for the club probably, I’m not going to crucify him regardless of how bad he plays. Hope he has a great game before his move to Juventus.

Jake: Actually quite happy with that looking for A big performance from Anthony Martial today but can’t say I’m looking forward to seeing that defence play.

TEAM NEWS – MANCHESTER UNITED

18:55: Right, Jose Mourinho has made some incredibly BOLD team changes. So bold that I wrote it in capital letters…

Anyway, I suppose the headline news is that Alexis Sanchez has dropped to the bench. Does this mean he’s in or out of the FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham on Saturday?

There are only four survivors from Sunday’s defeat to West Brom with David De Gea, Chris Smalling, Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera in the starting XI.

Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial lead the line with Pogba and Marouane Fellaini in the middle.

A first league start since August for Daley Blind…

TEAM NEWS – BOURNEMOUTH

18:50: Nice and settled for Eddie Howe, who makes just two changes to the side who were comfortably beaten by Liverpool.

Dan Gosling and Jermain Defoe drop to the bench with Callum Wilson and Andrew Surman returning to the starting XI.

EVENING…

18:35: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of Bournemouth vs Manchester United.

Have you guys seen that yellow thing in the sky?

I know it’s terribly British to discuss the weather, but I needed an excuse to tell you that I had no hesitation in wearing shorts, sun glasses and flip-flops today.

Yep, I’m that guy…

Anyway, the Premier League juggernaut just keeps going with another offering from the Vitality Stadium.

Manchester United are looking to bounce back from their shock defeat to West Brom, while Eddie Howe’s side are still in contention for a top-ten finish.

BOURNEMOUTH vs MANCHESTER UNITED

Bournemouth remain without Adam Smith and Junior Stanislas.

Both are suffering with knee injuries, and Stanislas to the extent that he will not return this season.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe otherwise has a fully-fit squad from which to choose.

Jose Mourinho intends to make changes.

Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Scott McTominay were unused substitutes in Sunday’s loss to West Brom and will hope to be involved, so too the likes of Marouane Fellaini, Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw after being absent from Sunday’s squad.

Back-up goalkeeper Sergio Romero has been out since sustaining a back injury on international duty with Argentina, while Daley Blind is back in training and pushing for a return.
