Real Madrid and Bayern Munich meet in tonight’s blockbuster Champions League semi-final clash.

The two sides, both giants of the European game, meet each other in the first leg of their eagerly-anticipated last four tie at the Allianz Arena.

Holders Real Madrid, who are bidding for a 13th European crown and a third in succession, beat the Bundesliga champions in last year’s quarter-finals.

But Jupp Heynckes, also a winner with Bayern in 2013, and Zinedine Zidane insist it counts for nothing tonight.

BAYERN MUNICH 1-2 REAL MADRID – ASENSIO

57: Shocker! What a terrible mistake from Rafinha to gift Real Madrid a massive advantage.

Rafinha inexplicably squares the ball straight to Modric, who says thanks very much and strides forward before releasing substitute Asensio.

The Spanish international collects before clipping a cool finish beyond Ulreich.

55: I spy Karim Benzema warming up on the touchline with a coach barking some instructions at him. I hope he’s listening because the guy is saying a million words a-minute.

54: First booking of the match goes Ribery’s way. He caught Varane but nothing too cynical about it.

53: Navas is all over the place. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that he’s just raced off his line and misjudged the flight of the ball by ten yards.

Close! Ribery weaves his way to the byline before sending in a low cross that somehow alludes everyone.

51: Cristiano Ronaldo shoots… and it’s out for a throw-in.

48: It’s all still a bit sloppy. I can’t believe I’m saying that about these two sides. Stray passes left, right and centre.

45: Back underway folks. Isco off, Asensio on. I’ve just been listening to Steven Gerrard in the BT Sports studio. You might be interested to hear that the Liverpool icon would prefer his former club played Bayern Munich in the final.

Should they get there, of course…

Daniel: Bayern should target Keylor Navas in the second half with crosses and long shots because the Costa Rican is all over the place!

Ellie: What on earth was Ulreich doing? He dived like he was clutching his teddy bear to his chest. Bizarre.

Jack: Marcelo is easily the best left-back in the world, and the last 10 years.

Lots of love for Marcelo, not so much for either goalkeeper…

BAYERN MUNICH 1-1 REAL MADRID

HT: Marcelo has now scored three goals in the Champions League this season, his best ever tally in a single campaign in the competition.

HT: Real Madrid survive another late scare as Kimmich’s whipped delivery bounces off Muller before dribbling wide.

What a strange 45 minutes. The quality has been terrible for the standards expected of these sides. Zinedine Zidane will be delighted with 1-1 at the break.

46: Robert Lewandowski with a golden chance to retake the lead on the stroke of half time. A free-kick finds the unmarked striker in the box but he’s headed it straight at Navas, who spills before gathering, obviously.

BAYERN MUNICH 1-1 REAL MADRID – MARCELO

43: Is it full-back night or something?!

Bayern Munich have been in complete control, but out of nowhere Marcelo slams in an absolute beauty.

The hosts allow a speculative ball to bounce across the edge of their box and the Brazilian pings a low daisycutter right into the corner.

41: Block! Real Madrid are living dangerously. Rafinha has acres of space to pick out Muller inside the penalty area, and Ramos makes the vital interception. It’s critical the visitors don’t concede another before the break.

Mats Hummels arrives late and connects with a Lewandowski flick-on, but the centre-back volleys over. Roles reversed and that would have been 2-0.

39: Bayern want blood! Not literally. They want Carvajal booked for a foul on Rafinha, but it was nothing more than a trailing leg. As you were…

38: Kimmich finds Lewandowski around 20-yards from goal but he’s pulled the trigger too early and Navas isn’t troubled.

36: Keylor Navas’ confidence is shot. Instead of a routine catch, he flies off his line like Superman to punch a cross into orbit. Niklaus Sule replaces Boateng.

35: Only Robert Lewandowski (42) and Thomas Muller (29) have been directly involved in more goals in all competitions for Bayern Munich this season than Joshua Kimmich (19 – 5 goals, 14 assists). Sign him up!

34: Another change for Bayern Munich. Bit of a nightmare start in terms of injuries. Jerome Boateng has over-extended and pulled a hamstring. He’s receiving treatment but I don’t think that’s something you can shake off.

33: I imagine somewhere in a back room at Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge somebody is preparing a huge new contract for David de Gea and Thibaut Courtois…

BAYERN MUNICH 1-0 REAL MADRID – KIMMICH

30: And there was me preparing a post about how Real Madrid have done well to silence this crowd. Not anymore!

But my goodness, that was a catastrophic error from Keylor Navas. Surely that’ll be that goal that sees him binned this summer.

Joshua Kimmich goes on his own down the left flank, ignores the central Lewandowski before lashing in the opener at the near post.

Navas seemed to dive expecting a cross, and completely dived out of the way of the ball!

27: Nothing much doing in Munich I’m afraid to report folks. It’s tense, cagey and a little hesitant from both sides. No signs of a Roma-style meltdown. Then again, Mohamed Salah isn’t on the pitch to spark one.

24: Close! Luka Modric sends Javi Martinez to the shops with a sharp turn but Boateng stops the one-two with Ronaldo.

21: “It wouldn’t surprise me if this was the year that Real Madrid went and finally bought a goalkeeper,” says Steve McManaman to send Man Utd and Chelsea fans into meltdown.

18: Ronaldo goes over expecting a free-kick but referee Bjorn Kuipers sides with Boateng. An angry Allianz Arena want him booked.

15: I’ve not seen Cristiano Ronaldo this quiet since that god-awful statue of his was unveiled in Portugal. Bayern doing a good job of silencing him. Real Madrid can’t keep the ball.

12: Another break in play as Lewandowski and Ramos have a clash of shins. Both are fine but we’ve lost a bit of intensity since the opening.

9: Robben looks like he’s twanged something. Yes, it’s a definite twang as Thiago replaces the winger. That shows Bayern’s strength in depth, Thiago is class.

6: Yep. This match is going to be crazy. Two great chances and a penalty shout inside six minutes. Ribery wants a spot-kick when his effort cannons onto Carvajal’s arm. Referee Bjorn Kuipers (I think of kippers too) says no.

3: Another update, another good chance early doors. Bayern are caught napping and Isco surges down the left before cutting a cross across the six-yard box. Not a single Real Madrid player in sight.

2: Wow. We’ve almost seen the opener inside 10 seconds! Carvajal terrible clearance drops for Lewandowski, but Muller can’t convert with an acrobatic effort. Early warning sign.

1: And we’re off! Can one of these sides ‘do a Liverpool’ by placing one foot in May’s final in Kiev? Let’s find out.

TWO-MINUTE WARNING

19:43: The players have emerged from the tunnel to cacophony of noise inside the Allianz Arena. It’s a rather pleasant 20 degrees in Munich this evening. Perfect weather for football – whatever that’s supposed to mean.

LEWANDOWSKI vs RONALDO

19:42: Don’t worry, we’ve got Steven Gerrard to settle this debate.

“High level, different in a few ways,” he told BT Sports. “But two of the best in the world for sure & I think what stood out for me in terms of watching the clips is different types of goals.

“Left foot, right foot, headers, high-class movement, always on the move in the box. You can’t blink when you’re watching these two because you’ll miss it.”

BAYERN MUNICH vs REAL MADRID

19:40: Quick reminder of those line-ups.

Bayern Munich XI: Ulreich, Kimmich, Hummels, Boateng, Rafinha, Martinez, Robben, James Rodriguez, Muller, Ribery, Lewandowski.

Subs: Starke, Wagner, Sule, Thiago, Bernat, Rudy, Tolisso.

Real Madrid XI: Keylor Navas, Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Marcelo, Casemiro, Lucas Vazquez, Kroos, Modric, Isco, Cristiano.

Subs: Casilla, Vallejo, Benzema, Bale, Theo, Asensio, Kovacic.

SERGIO RAMOS…

19:35: Steven Gerrard has managed to stop Rio Ferdinand talking about Cristiano Ronaldo for five seconds. Congratulations, Stevie.

Instead, the Liverpool icon praised Sergio Ramos, who has returned to the starting XI having missed the clash with Juventus at the Bernabeu.

“He’s just as important as Ronaldo for me, which is the biggest compliment that you can pay him. He’s a leader, he’s a serial winner. When he was missing in that second leg against Juventus they were so lucky to get across the line. If he’s in there it’s not that messy.”

JUPP, FOR MY LOVE…

19:30: What’s that? Using The Pointer Sisters to make a cheap pun about Jupp Heynckes? Yep. That’s how we do things.

Heynckes has guided both clubs to Champions League glory in the past. His success with Real in 1998 – beating a Juventus side that included Zidane in the final – ended a 32-year wait for European success at the Bernabeu.

Heynckes, also a winner with Bayern in 2013, said: “I have some great memories in the Champions League, 1998 for example. It was a fantastic feeling when the whistle went and Real were European champions again. It was a big moment but I do not like to look back, I live in the present.

“It’s a wonderful privilege to have had success in my career and to reach the semi-finals – and hopefully the final – against one of my old clubs, Real Madrid.”

STEADY ON!

19:25: A few of the Real Madrid players are enjoying a spot of five-a-side. It’s way more rigorous than I was expecting. Can someone remind them that they’ve got the biggest game of the season coming up in 20 minutes.

BALLON D’OR…

19:20: A world without either Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo winning the Ballon d’Or? Doesn’t feel right…

But that’s what is looking increasingly likely.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah’s virtuoso display yesterday means he poses a serious threat to their grip on the award.

The Spain-based duo have had a stranglehold on the prestigious Ballon d’Or award since 2008, each winning the trophy for the world’s best player five times. But Salah’s decisive performances are threatening to break that hegemony.

Since signing from Roma last season, the 25-year-old has already equalled the Premier League record for goals in a 38-game season with 31. He also recently pipped Kevin de Bruyne, Leroy Sane and David Silva of runaway champions Manchester City to the PFA Player of the Year award.

FAVOURITES…

19:15: Well there isn’t a favourite, if the two managers are to be believed. Zinedine Zidane and Jupp Heynckes both believe tonight’s semi-final is wide open.

Zidane said: “I don’t think there are any favourites. It’s a semi-final – it’s completely different to last season. It’s a different match.

“We are in the semi-finals and we want to play a good game. We are prepared for that, knowing that we are going to have to suffer.

“We will need a big performance against a strong opponent. Bayern are a great club with great team spirit. I have no doubts that mentally we will be at 150 per cent.”

Opposite number Heynckes echoed those thoughts. He said: “Both of our teams will provide us with attractive football. There are big players and it will be an open game. For me there is no favourite but I have a good feeling.

“We have had success in the Bundesliga, reached the final of the cup and we want to cap that with the final of the Champions League.”

Jay: Going for a 2-1 Real Madrid win tonight. I want them to get the victory because I don’t want Liverpool facing Bayern Munich in the final.

Seen: Not too sure who I want to win tonight, probably Bayern given Real Madrid’s recent experience. I assume they are both more sure about who they would like to play in Kiev between Liverpool and Roma.

Benjamin: If Real Madrid win the Champions League I don’t want to hear anybody saying “they had an easy path” PSG, Juventus, Bayern Munich, and probably Liverpool…

Ok Benjamin, I promise…

FOE…

19:05: I’m not sure the term ‘foe’ is strong enough to describe Cristiano Ronaldo’s record against Bayern Munich.

The Portuguese superstar has scored nine times against the Bundesliga champions.

The only player to have netted more Champions League goals than that against a single opponent is… himself! Juventus are the poor recipients of that particular record.

TEAM NEWS – BAYERN MUNICH

19:00: No great surprises in Jupp Heynckes’s selection.

James Rodriguez, who is on loan from Real Madrid, starts against his parent club at the Allianz Arena. I’m sure he won’t come back to haunt them…

David Alaba is ruled out of the semi-final first leg with a thigh injury.

TEAM NEWS – REAL MADRID

18:55: Right then Mr Zidane, what have you done with your team selection.

For starters, Zinedine has dropped compatriot Karim Benzema, Asensio and Gareth Bale to the bench with Lucas Vazquez getting the nod ahead of the superstar trio.

Cristiano Ronaldo will play as the lone striker, which makes sense considering he’s scored in every single Champions League game he has played in so far.

Sergio Ramos is restored at centre-back having missed the controversial Juventus second leg through suspension. He’s alongside Raphael Varane.

BALE ULTIMATUM

18:50: See what I did there? Yep, that’s right. It’s like The Bourne Ultimatum…

Promotion in the bag.

Back in reality, Gareth Bale has not ruled out a move to Bayern Munich in the summer, and I suspect being left on the bench again this evening will only fuel rumours.

Bale’s future at the Bernabeu has been the subject of speculation for several months with a return to the Premier League a possibility.

The 28-year-old, who joined Real Madrid from Tottenham in September 2013 for a then world record transfer fee of £85million, said he was flattered to be linked with the Bundesliga champions.

“You can never rule out anything in football,” Bale told the German newspaper Bild. “Currently, I play football at Real Madrid and I enjoy that.

“Bayern have a fantastic squad and already in the past they have always been one of the most successful clubs in Europe. It’s an honour for everyone to be linked with this club. But as of now I am a Real Madrid player.”

Maj: Cristiano Ronaldo is going to be so heavily marked today. As long as he’s the decoy to draw their attention and open up space for the others, it works for me.

Ken: At the moment I want Real Madrid to beat Bayern Munich. Liverpool have zero chance against Zinedine Zidane’s side. I’d rather have them win the Champions League than Liverpool.

Michael: Everyone seems desperate for Real Madrid to qualify so they’ll stop Liverpool from winning it, however Bayern would blow them away as well!

18:40: There’s no sign of Gareth Bale in Real Madrid’s starting XI folks. Let the rumours of his imminent departure continue…

Bayern Munich XI: Ulreich, Kimmich, Hummels, Boateng, Rafinha, Martinez, Robben, James Rodriguez, Muller, Ribery, Lewandowski.

Subs: Starke, Wagner, Sule, Thiago, Bernat, Rudy, Tolisso.

GUTEN TAG

18:30: Having nailed a D+ in GCSE German, I was the obvious candidate to bring you LIVE coverage of tonight’s Champions League semi-final.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich meet at the Allianz Arena in the first leg of their eagerly-anticipated showdown.

Zinedine Zidane’s side are hoping to ease the pain of their diabolical domestic campaign by retaining their Champions League title.

While Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are looking to exact revenge after they were eliminated 6-3 on aggregate at the quarter-final stage by Zidane’s side last season.

It’s unlikely we’ll see the same crazy seven-goal thriller witnessed at Anfield last night, but with Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo on the field – anything could happen!

BAYERN MUNICH vs REAL MADRID

Zinedine Zidane has a selection dilemma ahead of Los Blancos’ Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich.

Karim Benzema has endured a below-par season in front of goal, scoring just twice in the Champions League and only five times in La Liga.

While Benzema’s movement greatly benefits his team-mates, Zidane could opt for Gareth Bale alongside Cristiano Ronaldo to provide a more direct threat at the Allianz Arena.

Elsewhere, Sergio Ramos is back from suspension and Nacho has returned to training and could be in contention for a place on the bench.
