Barcelona star Gomes is on Arsenal’s radar having spent the last two years at the Nou Camp struggling for form.
The Portugal midfielder was signed by Luis Enrique back in 2016, where he was tipped to emulate Xavi having blossomed for Valencia.
However, Barcelona have never seen the best of Gomes and Ernesto Valverde is now expected to cut him loose.
Arsenal want another midfielder despite Uruguay bulldozer Lucas Torreira being close to moving to north London.
The Independent say that Emery may offload several players to fund a move for Gomes.
But Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo suggest Arsenal may cut ties with Aaron Ramsey.
The Wales international has been tipped to succeed Per Mertesacker as club captain in the wake of the German’s decision to retire.
However, with just a year left on his contract, Arsenal may be forced to sell him.
Should Ramsey decline the offer of an extension, then Emery is prepared to get rid of him to secure Gomes’ signature.
But what the 27-year-old chooses to do, however, remains to be seen.
Gomes, meanwhile, described his time at Barcelona as ‘hell’ in an emotional interview back in March.
“I don’t feel good on the pitch,” he said.
“I am not enjoying what I am doing. The first six months were pretty good but then things changed.
“Maybe it’s not the right word to use, but it has turned into a bit of a hell, because I have started to feel more pressure.
“With pressure I feel fine, but with the pressure on myself, I don’t. The feeling that I have during games is bad.”
