The Gunners had a mountain to climb after a 3-1 defeat in the first leg but got off to an excellent start when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck inside five minutes.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles doubled the lead with an excellent header after 15 minutes following more good work from Aubameyang.
The Gabon striker then made it three midway through the second half when he tapped in Sead Kolasinac’s cross.
Rennes went close through Ismaila Sarr and Hatem Ben Arfa in a niggly game while Aubayemang missed a good chance to complete his hat-trick late on but the Gunners held on to progress 4-3 on aggregate.

Few real saves of note in the first half but got down well to push an effort from Ismaila Sarr onto the post after the break.
Took a whack on the leg to deny Ben Arfa late on, although the flag had already gone up.

Played a big hand in the opener with a darting run down the right, finding Aubameyang who exchanged passes with Ramsey before tapping home.
The youngster then arrived at just the right time to head Aubameyang’s deep cross past the stranded Tomas Koubek.
Stood up well defensively in the second half with some strong tackles as Rennes came back into the match.
RCB: Shkodran Mustafi – 5
The German was caught out on several occasions as he continues to look shaky in a back three.

Great positioning to make a number of key interceptions and was dominant in the air.

Lucky to avoid a yellow card early on when he clattered through the back of Clement Grenier.
Had a couple of other rash moments and had his hands full with a tricky Rennes attack.
LWB: Sead Kolasinac – 8
Superb last-ditch challenge to deny Sarr, with the Bosnian unable to contain a fist-pump after the successful slide tackle.
Was as effective in the final third, whipping a brilliant cross in for Aubameyang to tap home the third.

CM: Aaron Ramsey – 8
The driving force in the Arsenal midfield, playing key passes in both the Gunners’ first-half goals.
Carried the ball well and put himself about in a physical display that highlighted just how much Arsenal will miss him when he leaves.
CM: Granit Xhaka – 7
Got through heaps of work in front of the back four, with a highlight being a superbly timed tackle on Ben Arfa as he surged into the box.
CAM: Mesut Ozil – 6
Floated around the pitch in the first half, finding pockets of space and linking with his team-mates but faded badly after the break.

Showed excellent awareness to find space in the box early on, diverting Ramsey’s cross in for the opener.
Looked to be offside in the build up to the second but kept the move alive with a brilliant ball to find Maitland-Niles.
Fortunate to avoid going in the book for a rake on Damian Da Silva during an aerial challenge but made the game safe with a tap-in after Kolasinac’s cross and should have had a hat-trick late on.
ST: Alexandre Lacazette – 4
Cut a frustrated figure as he struggled to get into the game and duly went in the book for a poor tackle on Benjamin Andre.
Showed a couple of nice touches as he tried to bring his team-mates into the game but never really looked like scoring and was brought off before he was sent off.
