Arsenal tree to sign Evans on Wednesday in a late attempt to bring in another defender.

Manchester City had already overlooked Evans to sign Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte, leaving Arsenal as the sole suitors for Evans.

But a deadline day deal never materialised as West Brom shut up shop.

And Pardew has chastised Arsenal for not getting their act into gear sooner, saying he told the north London club a late bid would not go down well at the Hawthorns.

“It wasn’t for lack of warning to Arsenal and to all the clubs,” Pardew said.

“I’ve sat here every week saying don’t make a bid on the last day, because you’re not going to get what you want, really.

“Unless it’s a bid that’s going to knock us off our chair, and it was no way near that.

“So they got probably the response they were expecting with that bid, I think.

“Jonny is a very, very important player. He is a great player. He is part of the spine of the team and that’s what I tried to strengthen this window.

“Jonny Evans hasn’t moved on and we brought Daniel Sturridge to strengthen that area right through the middle of the pitch. I don’t know which of the two was more important.”

signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on transfer deadline day to add to Konstantinos Mavropanos.

They were linked with a very late deal for Roma’s Kostas Manolas but no move materialised.

West Brom, meanwhile, signed Daniel Sturridge and Ali Gabr on loan last month, while Tyler Roberts was sold to Leeds and Max Melbourne joined Ross County on loan on deadline day.
