By the end of Infinity War there were vey few major superheroes left standing.
The ruthless directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, have already admitted that many characters who had less screen time in Avengers 3 will step up in the sequel.
Now the writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, have given a revealing new interview and it seems many of their plans were in place from the first collaboration with the Russos on Captain America Winter Soldier.
It looks like the entire galaxy has some new guardians…
Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanov spent much of Infinity War dashing around tryng to protect Vison and stop Thanos from ripping the Mind Stone from his forehead.
That ship has sailed. So what will they do now that Thanos has snapped his fingers and erased half of life across the universe, including many superheros?
In a major new interview with The New York times McFeely said: “We’re never writing without knowing where the end goes… We gave ourselves license to pay off later.”
That pay-off, it seems, will include ‘Cap and ‘Tash in a completely unexpected plot twist.
Fans have widely predicted that much of Avengers 4 will be focussed on the remaining Avengers and their allies trying to reverse The Snap.
This is expected to invlove time travel or even alternate dimensions as they either try to destroy the Infinity Stones before Thanos can uses them, or collect the gems to create their own Infinity Gauntlet.
Early shots from the Atlanta film sets have shown Steve Rogers in what looks like the New York battle from the first Avengers movie with no sign yet of Natasha.
The new comments from McFeely point to an even larger mission for them both.
After mainly defending Earth so far, McFeely said the two heroes: “have a much bigger role to play in that second film.”
The wording definitely makes it sound like both will be leaving the planet as a battered universe tries to recover from what Thanos has done.
Many expected Cap and Iron Man to be the focus of the movie, with one or both making the ultimate sacrifice. Natasha was expected to start rebuilding her relationship with Bruce Banner, but the linking of Captain America and Black Widow by the writers seems deliberate and implies they will spend a significant part of the upcoming movie together, and almost certainly not on Earth.
We have no idea yet what Captain America and Black Widow could do out there, although somebody needs to go and get Tony Stark back, but Avengers 4 suddenly just got even more exciting.
AVENGERS 4 IS OUT ON APRIL 27, 2019.
